FAQs

  • Women’s Health Physiotherapy is an area of physiotherapy that requires further postgraduate training. Women’s Health Physiotherapists are trained to assess and treat issues pertaining to the pelvic floor and pelvic organs including the bladder, bowel and uterus. Women’s Health Physiotherapy is different to general physiotherapy in that it often involves a lot of lifestyle advice as opposed to hands-on treatment. It is similar to general physiotherapy as much of what we do pertains to the musculoskeletal system of the pelvic area.

  • Many questions – all about your bladder, bowel and sexual function and any pregnancies and gynaecological history. In most cases, an assessment of your pelvic floor will be conducted. The most informative way to do this is via internal vaginal assessment which involves you lying on the treatment table with your underwear removed, whilst the physiotherapist assesses the inside of the vagina using their finger. Of course, this isn’t always the most appropriate form of assessment so your physiotherapist will work with you to find the method of assessment best suited to you. You will then be set you up with a tailored program of exercise and lifestyle changes to help manage your issue.

  • This is very much dependent on the issue you have come in for as well as your own individual circumstances. A Women’s Heath Physiotherapist is not the kind of therapist you need to see two times per week for the next 6 months and then weekly for the rest of your life. My goal as a Women’s Health Physio is to empower you with the skills, knowledge and tools you need to self-manage and improve your situation. Some conditions will require more frequent appointments at the beginning, some less, it is all dependent on the individual, but the ultimate goal is for you to become self-sufficient.
